Build a staircase

The staircase builder puts a run of stairs together part by part, drawn to scale, in the order you walk it.

Start a staircase

  1. In Rooms & measurements, tap + Add room, then Staircase.
  2. Add the parts with the buttons along the bottom, starting from the top: Straight, Winder, Bullnose or Room.
  3. Fill in each part’s sizes and tap Add, or Add another to add the next part straight away.
  4. Tap Save. The staircase appears in your rooms with its own card.

What to measure for each part

  • Straight: Width, number of Steps, Tread and Riser. Set Splits to cut the straight stairs into sections. They’re shared out evenly; drag a green split line on the drawing to move it, and it snaps to the next free step.
  • Winder: Length from the back of the tread at the furthest point to the bottom of the riser. Width across the widest points.
  • Bullnose: Width around the curve or band. Length over the tread, under the nose and down the riser. If you cut a cap and a band separately, add two bullnoses and name them “Cap” and “Band”.
  • Room: a landing or hallway in the run. Choose Simple for length × width, with Landing, Half landing, Quarter landing and Hallway to start from. Draw opens the room editor, and Existing links a room already on the job.

When a winder or bullnose matches an earlier one, open it and tap Same as to copy that one’s length and width. To repeat a part, use Duplicate on its ⋯.

Change the run

  • Tap a part to change its sizes. A stair part’s ⋯ has Duplicate, Move up, Move down and Delete. A room in the run has Edit in room editor and Remove from staircase, which leaves it on the job.
  • Staircase options (⋯ at the top) has Rename, and switches the list between List starts at the top and List starts at the bottom.
  • Later, open the staircase’s card and tap Edit staircase.

Good to know

  • Choose the stairs’ product on the staircase card, as for any room.
  • Stairs are ordered from a cutting plan, which lays every straight section, winder and bullnose on the roll. Until the staircase is on a laid-out cutting plan, its card says Needs a cutting plan and it’s priced from its measurements plus the extra length per cut.
  • A landing or hallway you add becomes a normal room on the job when you save. Its product, cutting plan and joins are on its own card.
  • Deleting a staircase deletes its stair parts. Its rooms stay on the job unless you tick Also delete its rooms.
